Another Happy Family!
What joy it is to learn another forever family is being formed. Meet the Rodriguez family. They had such a difficult time deciding which dog to bring home... at the time of this post, it is still up in the air. However, don't count out a double adoption!
We Love Our Group Volunteers
Savannah, Sarah, Ryan, Ashleigh |
The ladies from TALH: Texas Academy volunteered with us yesterday. When groups come, we try to pair them off in work teams so they have partners. Ashleigh and Savannah worked in the puppy room and Sarah and Ryan stayed in the cat room. They all spent time socializing with our furry friends. Sometimes our college students spend time socializing here because they cannot have their animals in the dorms and they miss them. So, we help provide them with a 'temporary' fix and it helps keep our animals with love and friendship while they wait for their forever families. Through the experience, Ashleigh is actually in the process of adopting with her family back home. She goes back to Dallas this weekend to get all the needed paperwork to complete her adoption. She loves spending time with her hopeful new forever family addition.
Fair Warning!
Audine is one of the early staff arrivals at the shelter. After a long night alone, Fife often joins us in the office. I try to be patient as Audine spends some quality time with Fife. However... HELLO!!??!! I am LOOPY... I am the one who gets her undivided attention!! I will share "Mr. Fife" but only for short time periods. So do not think it is okay with me that you jump up on her desk trying to get all of the attention... consider this fair warning!

Frolicking Felines Finding Their Way
For obvious reasons, I, as a soft pup, do declare myself not always willing to snuggle up with a cat. However, Fife is one cat that has me open to the idea. Today, Fife was walking around the shelter as if he were the king... hmpf... maybe he is and no one told me. However I will tell you what I have learned about these frisky felines that I was not aware of before now.
First, cats are nocturnal. I had to think about that as I realize how often I could hear Audine's mom's cat roaming the house late at night and quietly snuggle closer wondering if it would find it's way into her room... phew, didn't happen. I also learned the one thing Audine does not like about cats is when they rub up on her legs. Did you know this is when a cat is marking his territory? I had no idea! I am still so fascinated by the things I continue to learn on the backside of the HSSET. Have you learned anything new?

Who Needs A Sandbox?
Who needs a sandbox? |
Mondays the HSSET is closed. This is when all the staff 'deep clean' their designated areas and have some quality time with some of the animals.
Here I am playing in one of the litter boxes being set up for tomorrow. Do you see all of these litter boxes? Every day a fresh set are set up for the next day.
One of the many bags of cat litter used to keep the cages clean and the cats healthy. |
In the afternoon, just before everyone goes home for the evening, they bring in the fresh set of pans to prepare for the morning cleaning.
Can you imagine how much litter we go through every week? I haven't actually counted ... yet ... but I can tell you there is a large amount in what is called the "cat patio". I commend our staff as they are very careful to keep the cat cages clean to prevent illness and promote good health.
I'm thinking of getting a special box just for me to play in. I wonder if my friends would let me?

I'm in Love
I was pilfering through Brittany's desk when she was off the other day (shhhh don't tell) and saw this calendar. I am on a mission. I must find out who the gorgeous model is in this calendar. I just know this pup is the one for me. I have visions of finally settling down ... maybe even my my forever family can begin. Hmmm... I see puppies in my future. What do you think?
Rhonda Rollicking with Her New Friends
I don't see how ya'lls heart can handle it all! And, Ms. Brittany is an awesome person to have working with the animals ... she's amazing with them and I could tell how much she loves all the animals."
We love our volunteers and hope to get more new ones every month. Our volunteers allow our furry friends a chance to get out and play one on one and have contact with people more often. There are two reasons behind this. 1.) it allows the dogs to "be happy" as Rhonda described. 2.) It helps with the transition of our animals to their forever families.
Will you think about volunteering with us?
Sharing Snuggles with Snookum
Cory spent some much needed time with Snookum today. Cory is one of our volunteers that began working with us from Coast Guard. He and Snookum were able to spend some quality time together. Of course, Snookum didn't like when I came to talk to Cory. She thrives on the attention and I was invading that time... so I 'snooked' away as not to interrupt their time anymore.
